Duck Heals Golden Retriever Battling Epilepsy Side Effects

When epilepsy medication stole the joy from their golden retriever Barley, the Cannarelli family never imagined the cure would come waddling on webbed feet.

Tori and Justin Cannarelli of Brookhaven, Long Island, adopted Louie the Duck after he hatched at a local elementary school. The couple, who own a garden center, thought the arrangement would be temporary and that Louie might add some excitement to their store.

But Barley had different plans. The seven-year-old golden retriever had started having seizures two years earlier, and while medication stopped the episodes, it came with a crushing cost. The drugs drained her energy and dimmed the sunny personality that golden retrievers are famous for.

"She lost her goldenness, her fun, her spunk," Tori told the Washington Post. "She was always sleeping or mopey. It was heartbreaking."

Then Louie arrived home, and everything changed. The duck and dog formed an immediate bond that neither species nor common sense could explain. Barley started visiting Louie's protected pen every morning, where they wrestled playfully and stole bites of each other's food.

"They fell in love with each other instantly," said Tori, who now jokes that Louie is Barley's emotional support duck.

The transformation happened almost overnight. Barley started smiling again. Her tail wagged with the old enthusiasm her family thought was gone forever. The personality that medication had buried came rushing back, all because a duck decided she was worth loving.

What makes this friendship special isn't just its adorable oddness. It's proof that healing sometimes comes from the most unexpected places. While Barley still takes her medication, Louie's endless silliness gives her something the pills never could: pure, unbridled joy.

The Cannarellis now share Louie and Barley's adventures on Instagram, where thousands follow their daily antics. What started as a temporary foster situation became the prescription nobody knew Barley needed.
