A 12-year-old, half-blind dog named Honey became her family's hero after taking on a bear that threatened their rural Cordova, New Mexico property earlier this month.

The Martinez family knew something was wrong when Honey kept tracking something unusual around their land, which is home to chickens, horses, and other animals. "She was tracking something at the time. We didn't know what, but we knew she was tracking something," said Denise Martinez.

By morning, they found Honey lying injured in the driveway. Scratches along fences and trees told the story: a bear had wandered onto their property, and Honey had confronted it head-on.

"Her face was swollen on the left, and that's when I saw, like her whole neck was just ripped from the back all the way down," said Leanna Martinez. Despite devastating injuries, Honey had made it back home.

The family rushed her to an emergency vet, where she stayed overnight. "It was just devastating. You know, I never thought I would ever see our dog in that shape," said Darren Martinez.

With medical bills mounting, the Española Humane clinic stepped in to provide affordable urgent care. They treated Honey's deep neck wound and set up ongoing bandage changes and medication. "Her face was so hugely swollen I mean you couldn't even tell features in her face," said Mattie Allen from the clinic.

Honey still faces months of recovery as her wound heals. But her family knows exactly what she did that night: she put herself between danger and everyone she loved.

Sunny's Take

There's something beautifully honest about Honey's story. She's not a guard dog breed or trained protector. She's a senior dog with limited vision who is, according to her family, afraid of the vacuum cleaner. Yet when it mattered most, instinct and love took over.

The Martinez family now calls her "the bear slayer" and "our little savior." Those nicknames tell you everything about what Honey means to them—and what one brave, aging dog proved she was capable of when her family needed her most.
