Honolulu Firefighters Save 6, Including 2 Infants, From Fire

Forty-nine Honolulu firefighters worked through thick smoke and near-zero visibility Monday night to rescue six people, including two infants, from a burning eight-story condominium. Everyone made it out alive, and not a single firefighter was injured.

The fire started just before 11 p.m. at Waipahu Towers, a building without a sprinkler system. Dispatchers immediately upgraded the call to a three-alarm response after learning the blaze might involve an exploding lithium-ion battery.

The first crew arrived within seven minutes and saw smoke pouring from the top floor. Firefighters established a water supply and launched an interior attack on an eighth-floor unit, battling the flames while searching room by room through conditions so smoky they could barely see.

They found four adults and two infants sheltering in place in separate apartments on the fire floor. Crews guided each person to safety while other teams fought to contain the blaze.

Firefighters brought the fire under control just after midnight and fully extinguished it 12 minutes later. They spent hours afterward checking walls and concealed spaces for hidden flames and removing water from apartments and stairwells.

Emergency medical teams treated residents at the scene, but no one needed hospitalization. All 49 firefighters were accounted for and uninjured. The American Red Cross arrived to help displaced families find temporary housing.
