How Humanity Wiped Out Smallpox Forever

The disease killed 300 million people in the 1900s alone, leaving survivors blind or permanently scarred. Then we made it disappear.

Smallpox terrorized humanity for at least 3,000 years, sweeping through populations century after century with devastating force. Around three in ten infected people died, and the World Health Organization estimates it killed 300 million in the 20th century alone.

But you cannot catch smallpox today through natural transmission. We didn't just control it. We eliminated it completely.

The breakthrough began in rural England in May 1796. English physician Edward Jenner had heard a curious country belief: milkmaids who caught cowpox, a related but milder disease, seemed protected against smallpox.

Jenner decided to test it. He took material from a cowpox sore on milkmaid Sarah Nelmes and inoculated James Phipps, the eight-year-old son of his gardener.

The boy became mildly ill, then recovered. Then Jenner did something that would never be allowed today: he deliberately exposed Phipps to smallpox.

James didn't develop the disease. Jenner had proven a revolutionary principle: the body's defenses could be trained against a dangerous enemy before encountering the real thing.

This discovery gave us the word vaccine, from vacca, Latin for cow. But it didn't eliminate smallpox overnight.

In 1967, the WHO launched an intensified worldwide eradication campaign. Health workers tracked cases, isolated infected people, and vaccinated their contacts, building rings of immunity around outbreaks.

The last naturally occurring case appeared in Somalia in 1977. On May 8, 1980, the World Health Assembly officially declared smallpox eradicated.

Why This Inspires

This achievement towers even higher when you consider what humanity accomplished without modern advantages. No internet to coordinate global efforts. No sophisticated labs in every country. No rapid transportation to rush vaccines across continents.

The Covid-19 pandemic gave our generation a frightening glimpse of what an infectious disease can do, causing over seven million officially reported deaths in just a few years. Yet even with all our modern medicine and technology, we struggled to contain it.

The generations who fought smallpox faced a deadlier virus for centuries without those tools. And they won.

Smallpox remains the only human infectious disease ever completely eradicated worldwide, proof that when humanity works together toward a common goal, we can achieve the seemingly impossible.
