Ireland's national postal service just hit a sustainability milestone that seemed impossible a few years ago, and they did it months ahead of schedule.
An Post announced it cut carbon emissions by 50% compared to 2009 levels, reaching its 2030 goal in May 2025. The achievement is even more remarkable because the company grew its delivery volume by 27% during the same period, handling 73 million items last year alone.
The postal service originally set the 50% reduction target for 2030 back in 2017. But in 2021, leadership moved the deadline up by five years because of the urgent need for climate action in Ireland. That bold decision meant completely transforming how the company operates while serving 2.5 million delivery points every working day.
Today, more than half of An Post's fleet runs on electricity or alternative fuels. The company deployed 575 new electric vehicles this year, with 30% replacing diesel vans outright. The rest upgraded older EVs that had limited battery range.
For heavy vehicles where electric options aren't practical yet, An Post switched 95% of its fleet to renewable hydrotreated vegetable oil. This biofuel cuts greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% compared to conventional diesel and runs quieter, creating healthier environments for drivers and communities.

The transformation extended beyond vehicles. An Post now powers 99% of its buildings with renewable energy. Its Dublin headquarters alone reduced energy use by 250 megawatt hours last year through smarter heating and cooling systems, earning LEED Platinum certification.
The Ripple Effect
An Post's success shows other companies that sustainability and growth aren't opposing forces. The postal service now ranks fourth globally in the International Postal Corporation's sustainability rankings while continuing to increase profits.
CEO David McRedmond emphasized that extreme weather in Ireland makes climate action feel personal for employees. "For my colleagues, sustainability is not a fashion but an imperative," he said after releasing the 2025 sustainability report.
The company also leads Ireland's circular economy efforts, helping customers sell or donate over 5 million clothing and household items through its digital platforms and post offices last year. An Post serves up to 1 million customers weekly in its post offices, giving it unique reach to promote reuse and recycling initiatives across the country.
The postal service aims to hit net zero emissions by 2030, and they're already more than halfway there.
