Maryland Little League Team Wins State After Opening Loss

A group of 9 to 11 year olds from Montgomery County just proved that losing doesn't mean you're beaten.

The county Little League All-Star team lost their opening game at the Maryland state tournament. Instead of giving up, they won every single game after that, including two championship victories to claim the state title.

"We lost our first game. It kind of shook us a little bit," said Manager Matt Hodges. "We had a pretty long road to get back to the championship game."

The team now heads to Beverly, Massachusetts this week to compete in the regional tournament. They'll face state champions from Delaware, Pennsylvania, Washington D.C., and across the Northeast.

Assistant Coach José Sánchez said that opening loss became the team's most valuable lesson. "In life and in baseball, you're going to get knocked down. You're going to lose sometimes. But the more you fight, the more you believe in yourself, good outcomes come from it."

Player Lucas Sánchez remembers how the coaches lifted the team after that first defeat. "Everybody was down on themselves. The coaches brought us back up like nothing happened. We had to win every game for the tournament, and we did it."

For his teammate Carson Hodges, the victory felt even sweeter because of the comeback. "I was really happy when we won it. We made it to the last game in the championship and we won it."

This story isn't just about winning a tournament. It's about kids learning that failure doesn't define you, but how you respond to it does.

The coaches kept their message simple all week: keep battling, leave it all on the field, and don't walk away wishing you'd tried harder. That mindset carried the team through game after game until they stood as state champions.

Assistant Coach Brendan Bila reminded the players that this moment is bigger than baseball. "This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to travel with your friends, represent the state of Maryland and play baseball."

No matter what happens in Massachusetts, these kids already learned something more valuable than any trophy could teach them.
