Mexico Hits 5 Gigawatts of Rooftop Solar Power

Mexico just lit up a major milestone in the fight against climate change, reaching 5 gigawatts of distributed solar power from more than 600,000 installations across the country by the end of 2025.

That's enough clean energy to power millions of homes, and it represents over $13 billion in investment from everyday people, businesses, and communities choosing solar. The western state of Jalisco leads the charge with nearly 100,000 solar installations alone, generating 748 megawatts of renewable power.

The secret to Mexico's solar success? A smart policy called net metering that pays rooftop solar owners for excess electricity they send back to the grid. Nearly 594,000 applications and 5,113 megawatts of installed capacity are connected to this program, making clean energy economically attractive for everyone from homeowners to small businesses.

The numbers tell an inspiring story of democratized energy. Systems of 50 kilowatts or smaller make up 98% of all applications, proving that regular people are driving this transformation. These smaller installations contribute over 3,251 megawatts, showing how individual action adds up to massive impact.

Meanwhile, slightly larger systems between 250 and 500 kilowatts represent less than 1% of applications but pack a serious punch at 989 megawatts of capacity. Mexico's National Energy Commission reports that 99.5% of all small-scale power systems in the country are solar, cementing the technology's dominance in distributed energy.
