Musical Celebrates 7,000 Strangers Welcomed After 9/11

When tragedy closed North American airspace on September 11, 2001, the tiny town of Gander, Newfoundland became an unexpected sanctuary for 7,000 stranded airline passengers. The townspeople opened their homes, shared their food, and showed the world what compassion looks like in the darkest moments.

That true story is coming back to life at Koorliny Arts Centre this September. Come From Away, the internationally acclaimed musical, returns for a special encore season running September 11 through 19, 2026.

The musical follows those extraordinary nine days when Gander's population nearly doubled overnight. Strangers became friends as locals mobilized to feed, house, and comfort passengers who had nowhere to go. Some visitors were invited into homes for home-cooked meals, while others found community in makeshift shelters filled with warmth and welcome.

Directors Katherine Freind and Allen Blachford bring this uplifting tale to life through folk and rock-inspired songs by Irene Sankoff and David Hein. The production blends humor and heart to show how ordinary people responded to extraordinary circumstances with extraordinary kindness.

The show's impact has resonated worldwide. Come From Away has won four Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical, plus the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical. Its 2024 season at Koorliny also earned the Robert Finley Award for Best Musical from Western Australia's Independent Theatre Association.
