NIO Hits 120 Million Battery Swaps in China

That's exactly what 120 million battery swaps looks like for Chinese EV maker NIO, which just hit this remarkable milestone while expanding the service to more drivers than ever before.

NIO has spent years betting on battery swapping when most competitors focused solely on charging stations. Now that commitment is paying off in a big way, with the company completing 20 million swaps just since February.

The company's newest achievement is opening these stations to Firefly, its budget-friendly small car brand. This move could be a game changer for city dwellers who can't charge at home.

People who buy smaller, cheaper cars often live in apartments without dedicated parking spots. For them, a three-minute battery swap beats hunting for public charging stations and waiting around for hours.

NIO is also rolling out its fifth-generation swapping stations in seven major Chinese cities: Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Suzhou, Hefei, Chengdu, and Quanzhou. The timing couldn't be more symbolic since the first fifth-gen station was also NIO's 4,000th overall.

These new stations are the first that can service every single vehicle the company makes, from luxury NIO models to affordable Firefly compacts. That flexibility means more drivers can access the technology without worrying about compatibility.

The infrastructure is becoming genuinely useful too. NIO has built over 1,000 swap stations along highways, connecting major travel corridors across China. In cities, eight out of ten users have a station within two miles of home or work.

The Ripple Effect

What started as one company's unusual bet is now changing how millions of Chinese drivers think about electric vehicles. Battery swapping solves one of the biggest obstacles to EV adoption: the charging hassle for people without garages.

As NIO expands the technology to cheaper cars, it's proving that premium features don't have to stay premium forever. The same infrastructure that served luxury buyers now helps everyday drivers make the switch to electric.

The pace is accelerating too, with the company adding stations and completing swaps faster each year. What took years to reach 100 million swaps took just six months to add another 20 million.

By making battery swapping work for small affordable cars, NIO is showing that clean transportation can fit into real people's real lives.
