NY School District Saves $9.5M With Solar Upgrade

Mount Sinai School District in New York is getting a $5.28 million solar makeover that will pay for itself twice over. By late 2027, rooftop solar panels will generate clean electricity across all three district schools while saving taxpayers $9.48 million over the next three decades.

Energy company Ameresco is installing solar arrays on the high school, middle school, and elementary school buildings. Each system will produce enough power to cut the district's annual energy costs by more than $202,000.

The numbers tell an impressive story. The high school will get a 523.9 kilowatt system, the middle school a 570.5 kilowatt array, and the elementary school a 494.4 kilowatt installation. These panels come with a 25-year warranty and should still produce 87% of their original power after 30 years.

Beyond saving money, the district is replacing outdated lighting with efficient LEDs and swapping old transformers for modern equipment. Local workers will handle the installation, supporting jobs in the regional economy.

The real magic happens when students walk into their classrooms. Real-time energy data from the solar panels will feed directly into STEM lessons across all grade levels.

Students will track how much electricity their school generates on sunny versus cloudy days. They'll analyze seasonal patterns and weather impacts using live data from their own rooftops.
