NYC Expands E-Bike Battery Swapping to All Five Boroughs

Delivery riders in New York City just got a safer way to power their e-bikes, and it could save lives.

The city is expanding its battery swapping program to all five boroughs after a pilot program proved that giving riders access to certified batteries dramatically reduces dangerous home charging. Between 2022 and 2025, faulty e-bike batteries sparked 900 fires across New York City, killing 30 people and injuring 400 more.

The pilot program launched in March 2024 with just five stations in Brooklyn and Manhattan. City officials wanted hard data before investing in a full scale rollout, so they tracked 120 delivery riders over five months.

The results exceeded expectations. Those 120 riders made more than 8,000 battery swaps at the stations, and 84 percent of them had been charging at home before the program started. More than half stopped home charging completely once they had access to the public stations.

The convenience factor surprised city planners too. Riders reported they could work longer hours because they always had access to a full charge. They also ditched their backup batteries, which meant less weight to carry around the city all day.

By the end of 2024, the Department of Transportation approved 25 new stations targeting the busiest delivery neighborhoods. Manhattan, Downtown Brooklyn, Williamsburg, Long Island City, and parts of the South Bronx will get priority placement.

The Ripple Effect

The program's success is already spreading beyond city limits. German battery swapping company Swobbee, which partnered on the original pilot, has recorded 150,000 battery swaps since expanding to Jersey City and additional New York locations in early 2025.

Each new station comes equipped with fire suppression features and real time battery health monitoring. The system automatically alerts operators if something goes wrong, catching problems before they become dangerous.

Property owners can now apply for agreements to install their own swapping stations for tenants. The city coordinates these private installations with the Fire Department and Department of Buildings to maintain safety standards.

The stations offer both battery swapping and traditional charging ports for riders who prefer that option. During the pilot's first five months, riders used the charging ports nearly 1,000 times, showing there's demand for both services.

NYC delivery workers will access the expanding network through a membership program, though the city hasn't announced pricing yet. What matters most is that hundreds of riders will no longer risk deadly fires by charging uncertified batteries in their apartments.

Safe charging is becoming as easy as stopping at any station across the city.
