Olympic Gold Medalist Opens Gymnastics Gyms in Houston

A three-time Olympic gold medalist is transforming how young athletes experience gymnastics, and she's bringing that mission to Houston this summer.

Dominique Dawes made history in 1996 as the first Black woman to win individual Olympic gold in gymnastics. Now she's channeling that pioneering spirit into something equally groundbreaking: building gyms that care as much about mental health as they do about perfect landings.

The Dominique Dawes Academy opens its first Texas location in Jersey Village on May 30. A second gym will follow in Spring later this summer, expanding her mission to reshape gymnastics culture beyond the East Coast.

Unlike traditional gymnastics programs that focus solely on physical performance, Dawes' academies emphasize what she calls the whole athlete. Her approach recognizes that the pressure-cooker environment that defined gymnastics for decades needed to change.
