Pittsburgh Lands $160M for Clean Energy Tech Innovation

Western Pennsylvania is emerging as a powerhouse for defense innovation, robotics manufacturing, and clean energy technology after landing hundreds of millions in new investments that will create thousands of jobs.

The biggest win came through the Resilient Energy Technology and Infrastructure Consortium, a partnership between Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh, and West Virginia University. The National Science Foundation awarded the group $160 million over 10 years to advance energy storage and power grid technology. Private partners kicked in another $161 million, bringing the total investment to $321 million.

Defense software firm Air announced a $450 million expansion of its Pittsburgh office over the next 10 years, adding 40 new jobs. Battery manufacturer EOS is moving its headquarters to Pittsburgh's North Side as part of a $350 million investment that will bring 700 jobs to the region while building energy storage for America's proposed missile defense system.

Carnegie Mellon researchers showcased autonomous drones that can navigate complex environments using only smartphone-level computing power. These innovations could revolutionize search and rescue missions and deliver medical equipment to remote locations.
