Professor's String Demo Shows Moon Is 1,000x Further Than ISS

When astronauts flew past the Moon during the Artemis II mission in April 2026, they traveled 252,756 miles from Earth. Most of us can't picture that distance, but Professor Anu Ojha just made it crystal clear with nothing but string, two balls, and a classroom.

At The Royal Institution, Ojha started with a simple fact. The Moon sits roughly 10 Earth circumferences away from our planet.

He held an inflatable globe and wrapped a string around it 10 times. At the string's end hung a smaller ball representing the Moon, scaled to about a quarter of Earth's diameter, similar in size to Australia or China.

Then he asked a student to walk. After six or seven feet, Ojha stopped him at the distance most images show between Earth and Moon. But plenty of string remained.

The student kept walking, up a flight of stairs into the darkened back of the classroom, until the string finally unwound completely. The Moon ball was barely visible in the distance, far beyond what anyone expected.

But Ojha wasn't finished. He put that journey into even sharper perspective by comparing it to the International Space Station.

The ISS orbits just 400 kilometers above Earth. On his demonstration scale, that's the width of a finger. The Moon sits a thousand times that distance away.
