Santa Barbara now has one of California's most powerful electric vehicle charging stations, and it's designed to make going electric easier for everyone.
Electrify America just opened a downtown charging hub with 20 fast chargers that can deliver up to 350 kilowatts of power. That's enough to add hundreds of miles of range in the time it takes to grab lunch.
The real innovation sits behind the chargers. A 1.9 megawatt battery system stores electricity from solar panels and the grid during off-peak hours, then releases it when drivers need quick charges. It's Electrify America's largest battery setup yet.
This setup solves a big problem. Many locations can't support ultra-fast charging because the local electrical grid can't handle the sudden power demands. The battery acts as a buffer, bringing high-speed charging to places that previously couldn't support it.
"By incorporating advanced storage technology, we're able to bring Hyper-Fast charging to locations that have traditionally been difficult to serve," said Rob Barrosa, Electrify America's CEO. Downtown Santa Barbara was exactly that kind of challenge.

The timing couldn't be better for California families. With gas prices still straining household budgets, electric vehicles cost significantly less to fuel and maintain over time.
"With gas prices remaining a burden on working families, the move to electric is a matter of savings," said Senator Monique Limón, California State Senate President pro Tempore. She emphasized that expanding public charging makes the cleanest choice the most affordable choice.
The Ripple Effect: This isn't just about one city getting more chargers. The battery-backed model proves that ultra-fast charging can work anywhere, not just locations with massive electrical infrastructure. Electrify America already operates similar large-format stations in San Francisco, San Diego, and Santa Monica.
California leads the nation in both electric vehicles and charging infrastructure, but access has been uneven. Stations like this one help close the gap, making electric vehicles practical for renters, apartment dwellers, and anyone without home charging.
The station is Electrify America's second in Santa Barbara. The chargers currently use CCS connectors, with plans to convert some to the newer NACS standard that works with more vehicle types.
Every electric vehicle charged with clean energy is one more trip that doesn't burn fossil fuels, and now Santa Barbara has the infrastructure to power thousands more of those trips.
