The company's "Atlas" model looks like something from a sci-fi movie, but the technology is very real. In recent tests on sunny days, the car's built-in solar panels captured enough energy to travel 40 to 44 miles without touching a charging cable.

That's more than the average American's daily commute of 32 miles. For millions of drivers, that means free, emission-free transportation just from parking outside.

The process is surprisingly simple. Park the car facing east or west in the morning, and the solar panels do the rest. Drivers who move their cars throughout the day can squeeze out even more range by repositioning once or twice.

Even cloudy days deliver results. In one test under overcast skies, the Aptera team repositioned the car several times and still captured enough energy for 36 miles of driving.

Beyond the solar advantage, California drivers get another perk. Three-wheeled vehicles can use HOV lanes regardless of passenger count, a benefit that survived even after the state ended its electric vehicle HOV sticker program last year.

Aptera recently earned its Certificate of Conformity from the EPA, a major milestone proving the vehicle meets federal emissions standards. The company placed orders for body and chassis parts for its first 40 production vehicles, expected to arrive at their California factory in October.
