Students Build All-Terrain Wheelchair for Paralyzed Friend

When Vhan McGuire's motorcycle accident left him paralyzed in October 2024, he thought his days exploring the outdoors were over. The architecture student had always loved hiking and camping, but regular wheelchairs can't handle anything beyond hard, flat surfaces.

Then a friend connected him with three engineering students at Tennessee Tech University looking for a real-world challenge. Braden Hopper, John Avery, and Luke White decided to build something that would change McGuire's life.

They called it "The Chariot," a custom all-terrain wheelchair designed to handle rugged outdoor terrain. The powerful chair gives McGuire the freedom to navigate trails, grass, and uneven ground that would stop a standard wheelchair cold.

"Now, having a piece of equipment that can go anywhere and that I feel comfortable with is a blessing," McGuire said. "This gets me back to what I loved doing and how I loved living before my accident."

His description of what the wheelchair means to him says it all: "It gives me back my legs."

Why This Inspires

What started as a class assignment became a life-changing gift. The three engineering students could have chosen any project to fulfill their coursework requirements, but they chose to pour their skills into restoring someone's quality of life.

Their work shows how technical innovation paired with compassion can solve problems that really matter. Instead of building something theoretical, they created a tool that brings real joy and independence to someone who needed it.

McGuire isn't watching life from the sidelines anymore. He's back outside doing what he loves, exploring the natural world that once felt permanently out of reach.

A little ingenuity and a lot of heart helped one student reclaim his world.
