Sun King Brings Solar Power to 200M Africans by 2030

Imagine living your entire life without a light switch, then suddenly having the power to charge a phone, light your home, and run appliances for the first time.

That's the reality Sun King is creating for millions of families across rural Africa and Asia. Since 2007, co-founders T. Patrick Walsh and Anish Thakkar have been on a mission to bring affordable solar power to people living far from electrical grids.

The numbers tell an incredible story. Sun King now installs 330,000 solar kits per month across 11 African countries and two Asian nations. The company has raised more than $900 million to fund its work, proving that investors believe in this solution.

Walsh sees solar power as the answer for 90 percent of people living off-grid. Building traditional electrical grids in rural areas simply doesn't make economic sense anymore, he explains. With modern solar technology and reasonable financing, distributed solar kits deliver electricity more affordably per kilowatt hour than centralized or fossil fuel options.

The need is massive. About 655 million people worldwide still live without electricity, and 560 million of them are in sub-Saharan Africa alone.

Sun King isn't stopping with basic electricity access. The company plans to establish manufacturing facilities in sub-Saharan Africa to build appliances that run on solar power. Right now their kits come from China, but local assembly will create jobs while meeting customers' evolving needs.

Expansion is already underway. Sun King is launching in Ethiopia and Madagascar, bringing their proven model to new communities desperate for reliable power.

The Ripple Effect

When families get electricity for the first time, everything changes. Children can study after sunset. Small businesses can operate longer hours. Medical clinics can refrigerate vaccines. Women spend less time collecting firewood and more time on education or income-generating work.

This leapfrogging effect means rural Africa doesn't need to follow the same path wealthy nations took. These communities can skip straight to clean, affordable, distributed energy without the pollution and infrastructure costs of fossil fuels.

Walsh and his team are proving that serving "the most underserved" isn't just noble work, it's smart business. By 2030, another 200 million people will flip their first light switch thanks to the sun.
