Tamil Nadu to Fund 3 Free Cooking Gas Cylinders Annually

Millions of families in Tamil Nadu are about to get meaningful relief from rising cooking fuel costs, thanks to a new government program launching next January.

Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced the Annapoorani Super Six Scheme on Monday, which will reimburse eligible households for three domestic LPG cylinders annually. The program launches on Pongal Day 2027 and will benefit 130 million families across the state.

The reimbursement works through direct bank transfers. Families will purchase their cylinders as usual, and the government will collect purchase records from oil companies before crediting the money directly into beneficiaries' accounts.

Households earning less than ₹250,000 annually qualify for the program, along with small and marginal farming families and families caring for persons with disabilities. The initiative represents a ₹40 billion annual investment in household welfare.

The timing addresses a real crisis facing ordinary families. A four-month cylinder shortage caused by conflict in West Asia forced many households to switch to less efficient cooking fuels, while rising fuel prices squeezed already tight budgets.

The Ripple Effect

Beyond individual family savings, this program touches multiple aspects of community wellbeing. Reliable access to clean cooking fuel means healthier indoor air quality, especially for women who typically spend the most time preparing meals. Children benefit too, as families can redirect savings toward education and nutrition.

The program also delivers on a campaign promise, showing that electoral commitments to improve daily life can translate into concrete action. While the state government acknowledged facing financial constraints, officials prioritized this investment based on the immediate burden families were experiencing.

For a household spending significant portions of their income on cooking fuel, three free cylinders annually represents genuine breathing room in monthly budgets. That extra money can cover school supplies, medical needs, or simply provide a small cushion against unexpected expenses.

Tamil Nadu joins other Indian states working to make cooking fuel more affordable and accessible for families who need it most.
