When Avant Williams walked into his junior prom, he wasn't holding hands with a classmate or girlfriend. He was escorting the woman who'd dreamed of this moment for decades: his 17-year-old grandmother, Svala Heller.
The 17-year-old from La Crosse Central High School had been planning this night since he was just two years old. That's when his grandmother first shared her lifelong wish to experience an American prom.
Heller grew up in Iceland, where prom traditions don't exist the way they do in the United States. After years of watching American movies and TV shows filled with corsages, slow dances, and twinkling lights, she wondered what it would feel like to be part of that magic.
"I've always wanted to go to a prom," Heller said. "Watching American TV and all that glamour that goes with it."
Little Avant took her words to heart. He promised that one day, he'd make it happen.

This spring, he kept that promise. Before the dance, Williams and Heller posed for photos with his friends, treating the evening like any traditional prom experience. They laughed, they danced, and they made memories Heller says she'll treasure forever.
"We have such a special bond," she said. "I'm just taking every inch in and just enjoying every moment."
Williams' best friend, Ruben Smith, even joined as Heller's second date for the evening. "No one gets to take their best friend's grandma to prom," Smith joked. "It's special."
Sunny's Take
In a world where promises often fade with time, Avant Williams spent 14 years holding onto one he made as a toddler. His grandmother had been there for him his entire life, supporting him through every milestone. This prom wasn't just about fancy photos and slow dances. It was about honoring the woman who never stopped showing up for him.
For Williams, the night meant everything. "I've only been looking up to this moment since I was like 2 years old," he said. "I love my grandma. She's been there for me my whole life. I'm just happy I can make her dream come true."
Sometimes the best prom dates aren't the ones you expect, and the sweetest promises are the ones kept over a lifetime.
