Tennessee Seniors Trade Walkers for Inner Tubes at Slip 'N Slide

Who says giant slip 'n slides are just for kids? At Adams Place in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, seniors are proving that summer fun has no age limit.

The annual Ride 'n Slide event transformed the senior living community's lawn into a water park for a day. A massive tarp became the centerpiece as residents traded their walkers for inner tubes and flew down the slide, cheering and laughing the whole way.

The Murfreesboro Fire Department kept the slide soaked and helped residents safely on and off their tubes. Members of the Middle Tennessee State University football team joined in too, lifting spirits and lending hands to every participant.

Among those taking the plunge was Mike Mitchell, an Army veteran and retired Church of Christ minister who served for 60 years. As he approached his turn, Mitchell gave himself a pep talk. "I can do this," he said. "I'm a soldier, I can do this."

For many residents living with dementia or Parkinson's disease, the event offered something priceless. Organizers say participants light up during the experience, forgetting their challenges for a while and simply having fun.

One MTSU football player captured the spirit of the day perfectly. "Being able to help them up, it's a blessing just to make people's day, make them happy," he said.
