The Free Store in Corpus Christi is asking neighbors to roll up their sleeves and help create something Texas has never seen before.
The nonprofit recently acquired unused shower facilities at the Corpus Christi Community Center and plans to transform them into Ruthie's, a free community hygiene center. The facility will serve people experiencing homelessness with showers, laundry services, bike repair, food, hygiene supplies, and even dog kenneling.
But turning this vision into reality requires serious work. The space needs plumbing upgrades, electrical repairs, and plenty of manual labor to become fully operational.
Instead of hiring big corporations, founder and CEO Marilena Garza wants local business owners and community members to lead the charge. "This is a space for the community, by the community," Garza said.

She's specifically looking for skilled tradespeople with plumbing or electrical licenses, but anyone with a strong pair of helping hands is welcome. Volunteers can call Garza at (361)319-0933 to offer quotes or arrange work times.
The Ripple Effect
This project represents more than just clean showers. It's about restoring dignity to people who often lack access to basic necessities most of us take for granted.
When people have a safe place to shower and clean their clothes, they're better positioned to interview for jobs, reconnect with family, or simply feel human again. The addition of services like dog kenneling shows deep understanding of the homeless community, many of whom consider their pets family and won't seek help if it means abandoning them.
By making this a community-built project, The Free Store is ensuring local ownership of the solution. Small business owners get first crack at contributing their expertise, and everyday citizens can donate by texting "RUTHIES" to 53555.
When neighbors come together to care for their most vulnerable community members, everyone benefits from the stronger social fabric that results.
