UK Firm Cuts Fridge Truck Costs 81% With Solar Tech

Chiltern Distribution recently deployed Sunswap Endurance electric refrigeration units across its cold chain fleet. The technology replaces noisy, expensive diesel-powered cooling systems with electric units that charge from standard shore power and use rooftop solar panels to extend their range.

The results speak volumes. Operators using Endurance have achieved up to 81% lower refrigeration costs compared to diesel alternatives. For a company running multi-temperature trailers daily, those savings add up fast.

But the money isn't the only win. Chiltern's drivers report significantly reduced noise during overnight and early-morning deliveries, a game-changer for pharmaceutical work requiring access to urban and residential areas before dawn.

The system fits onto existing SOR trailers through a long-term hire agreement with TIP Group. No special installation or operational changes required. Depots already have the standard shore power needed for charging, and the solar panels handle the rest.

The Ripple Effect

This shift represents something bigger than one company's bottom line. Refrigerated transport accounts for a significant chunk of logistics emissions, and pharmaceutical cold chains must run 24/7 regardless of environmental impact.

Now there's a viable alternative. The Endurance system provides real-time asset performance data and temperature records that help with both maintenance planning and regulatory compliance. For pharmaceutical customers with strict temperature requirements, that transparency matters enormously.

"We've spent the last year investing in our people, our systems, and the way we run this business," said Brian Sagaseta, Chiltern Distribution's owner and managing director. "Endurance gives us the performance, data, and emissions reduction that wasn't possible before."

Other refrigerated fleet operators are watching closely. TIP Group continues expanding its partnership with Sunswap across the UK, and the technology center Sunswap recently opened suggests this is just the beginning.
