Modern solar panels being manufactured in bright factory showing advanced clean energy technology production

US Solar Startup Swift Buys Assets for New Clean Energy

🤯 Mind Blown

A California startup just acquired key technology to manufacture breakthrough solar panels that could make clean energy 30% more efficient. The move signals America's solar manufacturing boom is accelerating, even as domestic production capacity nearly doubled in 2025.

American solar manufacturing just got a major boost that could make renewable energy cheaper and more powerful than ever before.

Swift Solar, a US startup, announced it's purchasing the technology and manufacturing assets from German solar company Meyer Burger. The acquisition gives Swift everything it needs to produce a new generation of solar panels that break through the efficiency limits of today's technology.

The timing couldn't be better. US solar manufacturing exploded in 2025, with 65 new or expanded factories opening their doors. Domestic solar panel production capacity jumped 37% to surpass 60 gigawatts by October. Solar cell production capacity more than tripled, rising from 1 gigawatt to 3.2 gigawatts in less than a year.

What makes Swift's announcement exciting is the technology itself. Traditional silicon solar panels are hitting a wall around 30% efficiency. Swift's new perovskite-silicon tandem cells stack a second layer on top of regular silicon to capture light that normally goes to waste. That means more clean energy from the same amount of space.

"This acquisition puts Swift Solar on track to speed-run gigawatt-scale solar manufacturing in the United States," wrote Swift CEO Joel Jean. "The US needs more solar, and we need it built here."

The technology isn't just theoretical anymore. Swift's advanced solar cells already powered a portable microgrid for a Defense Department cybersecurity exercise in Virginia last summer. A DoD expert praised the technology for addressing "the growing power demands of the modern battlefield."

Swift plans to open a gigawatt-scale manufacturing facility somewhere in the US, though the exact location hasn't been announced yet. The factory will initially produce traditional silicon panels before adding the advanced tandem technology.

The Ripple Effect

This breakthrough matters beyond just better solar panels. Higher efficiency means developers can generate more clean electricity from rooftops and smaller plots of land. That solves one of solar energy's biggest challenges: finding enough space without creating conflicts over land use.

The entire American solar supply chain has now been rebuilt on US soil. Corning's new facility, which came online last year, completed the picture by producing the raw materials needed for solar panels. For the first time in decades, American companies can make every major component domestically.

The solar boom is creating thousands of manufacturing jobs across the country, even as volatile global energy prices make the case for homegrown clean power stronger than ever.

America invented the solar cell at Bell Labs in New Jersey back in 1954, but the industry moved overseas for decades. Now it's coming home, bringing next-generation technology with it.
