Virginia Team Rescues 4 From Venezuela Earthquake Rubble

When rescuers spotted movement beneath a towering pile of concrete in Venezuela's La Guaira state, everything changed in an instant.

Virginia Task Force 1, an elite urban search and rescue team from Fairfax County, had spent days searching through debris after two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 struck the country's northern coast. After four days with little reason to believe anyone had survived, crews carefully worked together to reach the survivors trapped underground.

First, they pulled a father to safety, covered in dust and exhausted but still clutching his cellphone. Moments later, rescuers brought out his young son as applause erupted from emergency workers and nearby residents who had gathered to witness the scene.

"At this stage many begin to lose hope. You see that in their faces," said Associated Press journalist Juan Pablo Arraez, who watched the rescue unfold. "When somebody makes it out alive, this father and son, it's more than a glimpse, it's real hope for people."

The Virginia team didn't stop there. Over the same weekend, they rescued a mother and her 9 month old baby from another collapsed building, both somehow escaping serious physical injuries despite being trapped deep beneath the debris.

"It was a very emotional experience, and it's great when all of the residents around you and the Venezuelans are clapping along because they're happy that these rescues are occurring," said team spokesman John Morrison.

The Ripple Effect

Virginia Task Force 1 deployed with 80 first responders and more than 70,000 pounds of specialized rescue and medical equipment, working alongside emergency crews from Venezuela and France. Their success gave surrounding communities something precious in the midst of overwhelming destruction: proof that miracles can happen even when hope seems lost.

In the face of tragedy, these four lives saved became powerful reminders of what's possible when skilled teams refuse to give up.
