Zoox Robotaxis Roll Into Houston, Testing in 12 US Cities

While most people focus on Waymo and Tesla in the race for self-driving taxis, another player has been racking up impressive wins without as much fanfare.

Zoox is launching robotaxi testing in Houston later this month, adding Texas's largest city to an already impressive roster of 11 other markets. The company now operates in major cities including Atlanta, Austin, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, Phoenix, San Francisco, San Diego, Seattle, and Washington DC.

For now, Zoox will test using retrofitted SUVs with human safety drivers on board. The company is already planning a charging and maintenance facility in Space City to support future operations.

Zoox's 2024 has been remarkable even if it hasn't dominated headlines. The company grew its user base faster than any competitor this year and launched a brand new robotaxi model designed specifically for autonomous driving.

It also achieved a regulatory first by becoming the initial company approved for paid robotaxi service without traditional human controls like steering wheels. After years of offering free rides while waiting for approval, Zoox finally began charging passengers last month.
