10 African Nations Lead in Supporting New Entrepreneurs

Ten African countries are setting the standard for entrepreneurship support, proving that business-friendly environments can flourish across diverse economies and regions.

The 2026 Africa Entrepreneurial Ecosystem Index assessed 30 nations across seven key areas: finance access, market opportunities, governance quality, human capital, infrastructure, professional support networks, and entrepreneurial culture. Rather than simply counting startups, researchers measured the conditions that help businesses actually succeed.

Mauritius claimed the top spot with the strongest overall ecosystem, scoring 4.30 out of seven possible points. The island nation excelled particularly in governance and support systems, creating clear rules and strong networks for business owners.

South Africa ranked second, leveraging its sophisticated financial system and large, diversified economy. Morocco took third place as the highest-ranking North African nation, benefiting from strategic location and expanding trade connections.

Tunisia secured fourth place through strong education systems and startup support policies. Namibia rounded out the top five, proving that smaller populations can still build excellent business environments through quality infrastructure and governance.

The remaining top 10 included Cabo Verde, Algeria, Egypt, Botswana, and Senegal. Together, they represent North, Southern, and West Africa, showcasing the continent's increasingly diverse business landscape.

The Ripple Effect

The geographic diversity among top performers matters. Countries with vastly different population sizes, resources, and economic structures are all finding ways to support entrepreneurs effectively.

Island nations like Mauritius and Cabo Verde face inherent market size limitations yet still rank among the best by focusing on institutional quality, connectivity, and regulatory clarity. Their success shows that economic scale alone doesn't determine entrepreneurial potential.

The strong showing from North African countries, which claimed four of the top 10 spots, signals the region's growing importance as a business and innovation hub. These nations are increasingly positioning themselves as bridges between African markets and international trade networks.
