103-Year-Old Fund Awards $3.9M to Students

For 103 years, one small scholarship fund has quietly changed thousands of lives by making college dreams possible.

The Columbia High School Scholarship Fund in New Jersey just celebrated a remarkable milestone. Since 1923, they've awarded more than $3.9 million to students who needed help paying for college.

The numbers tell a powerful story. In just the past 25 years, the fund has given 2,361 scholarships totaling over $3.36 million. That money has helped offset an estimated $4.5 million in student debt.

Last spring alone marked their biggest year yet. The fund awarded a record $290,000 to 165 students, more than any year in the organization's century-plus history.

"We had the all-time highest number of applicants and money awarded," said CHSSF President Madeline Tugentman at a June reception celebrating the milestone.

The fund started with a simple mission in 1923: provide need-based financial help to Columbia High School graduates pursuing any type of post-secondary education. That commitment hasn't wavered for more than a century.

Every scholarship means one less student choosing between their education and crushing debt. It means opportunity for students whose talent and drive deserve a chance to flourish.

The Ripple Effect

When you help one student afford college, you're investing in an entire community's future. Those 2,361 scholarship recipients over the past quarter century became teachers, nurses, engineers, and entrepreneurs who give back in countless ways.

The fund relies entirely on community support to continue its work. They're hosting their annual Red & Black Party fundraiser on September 25, where ticket sales directly support future scholarships.

At $125 per person, the cocktail party represents more than just a social gathering. Every ticket helps ensure another student can say yes to their college acceptance letter without the weight of impossible debt.

"CHSSF has been providing need-based scholarships to CHS students since 1923," Tugentman said. "Join us for a feel good time."

A century of changing lives, one scholarship at a time, proves what communities can accomplish when they invest in their young people's futures.
