11 Texas Seniors Win Scholarship Honoring Beloved Coach

Eleven students walked across a stage Friday carrying both their diplomas and the memory of a man who believed in them when they needed it most.

Veterans Memorial High School in Corpus Christi, Texas, awarded the first Leyton Hernandez Legacy Scholarship to graduating seniors who embodied the spirit of their late coach and teacher. The Hernandez family partnered with the school to create the award shortly after his passing.

For recipient Kylie Russell, the scholarship meant more than tuition help. "This scholarship means so much more than probably anything I've ever received," she said, her voice catching on the weight of the moment.

Hernandez taught classes and coached athletics, but students remember him for something bigger. He saw potential in teenagers who couldn't yet see it in themselves.

Brandon Reyes recalled how that faith changed him. "Just knowing that he had that confidence in me gave me the confidence in myself to be able to persevere through all these challenges," he said.

Kyle Wilson remembered pre-game moments in the weight room when Hernandez would hype up his players, making them believe they were ready for anything. That energy didn't stay contained to his teams or his classroom.

Why This Inspires

Davian Garcia never had Hernandez as a teacher or coach, yet he felt the man's influence throughout the school. "Whether he coached you or not, he inspired so many students at the school," Garcia explained.

The ceremony captured the bittersweet reality of honoring someone who left too soon. Russell admitted walking past Hernandez's empty classroom hits hard, but talking about him helps. "It makes it feel like he's here," she said.

The eleven recipients will scatter to different colleges this fall, but they're taking something with them. Grayson Carr put it simply: "I'm always going to bring him with me no matter where I go."

The scholarship does what the best tributes do: it keeps giving. Each year, new students will receive this award and learn about the coach who believed that every student deserved someone in their corner, cheering them on.

Garcia summed up what everyone in that room understood: "His legacy will forever live on."
