An 11-year-old Kentucky boy became a hero last week when he was the only person brave enough to jump into a pool and rescue a drowning man.
Avory Woolery was at his apartment complex when he noticed a man floating unconscious in the swimming pool. While others stood by, unsure what to do, Avory knew he had to act fast.
"No one was doing anything, so I put on my goggles. I went underwater," Avory told local news station WKYT. He grabbed the man and pulled him up from below the surface.
The young rescuer's words reveal a maturity far beyond his years. "I just felt really bad because there was no way that I was going to let another man die today," Avory said. "He's a human being. He should be treated as such."

Once Avory got the man onto solid ground, another person stepped forward to perform CPR until first responders arrived. The man was rushed to a local hospital where he remained in critical condition, but he had a fighting chance thanks to Avory's quick thinking.
Avory's father told reporters he couldn't be prouder of his son's decisive action. "Somebody, when I was walking up here, somebody said, 'Thank you, you taught him how to swim,'" Mr. Woolery shared, grateful that a simple life skill became a lifesaving tool.
Sunny's Take
What makes this story remarkable isn't just that Avory knew how to swim. It's that at 11 years old, he understood something many adults struggle with: sometimes you're the only person who can help, and that's exactly when you need to step up.
His words about treating the man "as a human being" show a depth of compassion that reminds us heroism isn't about size or strength. It's about recognizing our shared humanity and acting on it, even when fear tries to hold us back.
Avory didn't wait for someone older, stronger, or more qualified. He saw someone in desperate need and became exactly who that person needed in that moment.
