12 Rescued After 7 Sailboats Capsize on Detroit River

Twelve people are safe today thanks to quick-thinking emergency responders who pulled them from the Detroit River after seven sailboats capsized in a sudden storm on June 10.

The boats flipped in seconds during a fierce rainstorm that kicked up five-foot waves at Scott's Middle Ground, an area on the river. The capsized vessels sent 20 people into the water, sparking an immediate multi-agency response involving the Detroit Fire Department, Detroit Police Department, and U.S. Coast Guard.

"A storm kicked up, and within seconds, all seven boats were capsized," said Daniel Familant, a fireboat operator with the Detroit Fire Department. The boats were part of a local sailing class, with students and their instructor caught off guard by the rapidly changing weather.

Robert Douglas from Detroit Police's emergency management team described arriving to find three people clinging to the backs of their overturned boats. The weather had turned dangerously fast, with the rainstorm beginning only moments before the boats went over.

The rescue teams got unexpected help from members of a local yacht club who jumped in to assist. Together, the combined crews pulled 12 people from the water while the remaining eight made their own way safely to shore.

Paramedics stood ready on Belle Isle's shoreline in case anyone needed urgent medical care. All 20 people survived without serious injuries.

Familant used the incident as a teaching moment about water safety. He emphasized that life jackets should always be worn, even when they feel uncomfortable or unnecessary on a calm day.
