12-Year-Old Grabs Friend's Hair to Save Her from Drowning

A day at the beach turned into a life-or-death moment when 12-year-old Tamika saved her friend from drowning by grabbing her hair and pulling her to safety.

Tamika and 14-year-old Sofia-Ann were swimming off Pensarn beach in Conwy, Wales during a late-May heat wave when the tide cut them off from shore. The coastguard had already been alerted and rescue teams were on their way, but then the situation turned critical.

The girls lost their footing and were dragged underwater by the current. At that exact moment, Sofia-Ann had an epileptic seizure beneath the surface.

Tamika reacted instantly. She reached out and grabbed the only part of her friend she could reach: her hair. With nothing but that grip, she dragged the unresponsive teenager out of the water and back to the beach.

Sofia-Ann was rushed to the hospital where doctors drained seawater from her lungs. She survived, and doctors are still investigating what caused the seizures, which continued in the ambulance.

Why This Inspires

Tamika didn't just save her friend. She put herself in greater danger to do it, getting dragged under herself while still focusing on pulling Sofia-Ann to safety.

"She put herself in more danger to save Sofia-Ann, she's my little hero," said Sofia-Ann's mother, Jade McKenna. The rescue becomes even more remarkable knowing that Tamika's own mother, Shantika, says drowning is her biggest fear.

"Tamika got dragged under as well but she still focused on Sofia and getting her out of the water," Shantika said. Her daughter's quick thinking and courage in the face of her family's deepest fear shows that heroes come in all ages.

In a moment when every second counted, one 12-year-old proved that bravery isn't about being fearless—it's about acting anyway.
