Family of 4 Rescued From Sinking Yacht in Whitsundays

When a family's yacht struck Elizabeth Reef in the Whitsundays early Saturday morning, rescue teams faced a race against time as the 10-metre vessel slowly sank into the ocean.

The parents and their two children, ages 9 and 12, had been sailing about 120 kilometres off the Queensland mainland when disaster struck around 4am. They remained calm aboard their damaged yacht, waiting in the darkness as water slowly consumed their vessel.

At sunrise, a CQ Rescue Helicopters crew from Mackay arrived at the remote location. What followed was a masterclass in precision and courage.

The helicopter team maintained a steady hover above the stricken yacht while lowering a rescue swimmer to the vessel. One by one, each family member was secured and carefully winched to safety aboard the helicopter.

By the time the final person was lifted to safety, video footage shows the yacht had almost completely disappeared beneath the waves. The family had been rescued just in time.

The father sustained head injuries during the ordeal and received treatment on board the helicopter before being transported to Proserpine Hospital. The rest of the family was taken to Whitsunday Airport, shaken but safe.

The operation required immense concentration and coordination. One mistake in the hovering position, one moment of lost focus, and the outcome could have been tragic. Instead, four people got to go home.
