When Royal Cothrun saw an elderly woman in the scorching Arizona heat, he knew something was wrong. The 14-year-old was riding his bike through Gilbert in June when he noticed the woman appeared confused and overheated as temperatures climbed above 100 degrees.
Royal could have kept riding. Instead, he stopped and started talking to her.
The woman was Teresa Morgan, who had recently been diagnosed with dementia. She had become disoriented after a trip to the grocery store and unknowingly wandered miles from home in the dangerous heat.
"I knew it was hot. She was sweating," Royal said. He immediately recognized Teresa needed help.

The teenager guided her into the shade and stayed with her, talking patiently until she was able to remember her son Jeff's phone number. Royal called, and Jeff rushed to the scene just before the Gilbert Fire Department arrived.
Sunny's Take
For Teresa's family, Royal's compassion made all the difference. "It's incredible really, what he did," Jeff Morgan said. "Just so lucky, so fortunate that he ran across her and he cared enough to stay with her and to take care of her."
Firefighters agreed his actions were critical. "The outcome could have been, would have been much, much worse had he not done what he did," one firefighter said.
The Gilbert Fire Department and Air National Guard will honor Royal for his selfless actions. But for Teresa's family, he's already earned the only title that matters: hero.
Royal's story reminds us that heroism doesn't require superpowers, just the willingness to stop and care when someone needs help.
