1,446 Little Learners Start School in Border Region

Across Australia's Border and North East region, 1,446 little faces are lighting up classrooms as they pass the halfway point of their very first year of school.

The Border Mail captured these milestone moments at 70 schools throughout the region, showcasing foundation students whose educational journeys look remarkably different from one another. At St Francis of Assisi in Baranduda, 95 kindergarteners fill the halls with energy and laughter. Meanwhile, at Whorouly Primary School, young Sam holds the distinction of being the only foundation student, though he's hardly alone with nine grade 6 buddies looking out for him.

Some schools bring their own special touch to the learning experience. Bethanga Primary School features Arlo, the school's proud four-legged companion who greets students each day.

That first walk through the school gates marks more than just the start of academics.
