Nigerian teachers gathered in training hall learning Olympic education methods for students

150 Lagos Teachers Learn Olympic Values to Inspire Kids

✨ Faith Restored

Over 150 physical education teachers in Lagos, Nigeria are learning how to bring Olympic values of excellence, respect, and friendship into their classrooms. The training program helps teachers spot athletic talent while building character in young students.

More than 150 teachers across Lagos State are getting tools to transform how children learn about sports and values at the same time.

The Nigeria School Sport Federation and Nigeria Olympic Committee launched a two-day training program to teach physical education instructors about the Olympic Values Education Programme. With support from Olympic Solidarity and Lagos State education officials, the sessions focus on weaving excellence, respect, and friendship into everyday lessons.

Lagos marks the fifth Nigerian state to host the training, following successful programs in Plateau, Ogun, Bayelsa, and Kano. NSSF President Olabisi Joseph encouraged teachers to embrace fresh approaches so they can pass these values to their students.

The program does double duty. While teachers learn methods to instill character, they also gain skills to identify promising young athletes in their schools. Professor Clement Fasan, one of the IOC-certified trainers leading the sessions, explained that spotting talent early creates pathways for students who might become future sports stars.

Dr. Hakeem Babatunde Shittu, who leads the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, praised the initiative for matching the state's goal of developing well-rounded students. He wants children who excel academically while also learning integrity and social responsibility.

The Ripple Effect

The impact reaches far beyond the 150 teachers in the training hall. Each participant returns to a classroom full of students who will learn these Olympic principles. Those children carry the values home to families and out into their communities.

Olympic Values Education Coordinator Kemi Obidahunsi emphasized that the program builds on the Olympic philosophy of developing both body and mind together. The approach recognizes that physical activity offers powerful lessons about perseverance, teamwork, and treating others with dignity.

For many attending teachers, the training feels like more than professional development. They see it as a chance to shape how the next generation approaches challenges, celebrates victories, and supports one another.

The energy in the room reflects genuine excitement about bringing these lessons back to schools across Lagos, where millions of young students will benefit from teachers who know how to nurture both athletic ability and strong character.
