150+ Mayors Push Cash Assistance to Fight Costs
A growing coalition of mayors across America is backing direct cash payments to help working families afford rent, food, and healthcare. More than 100 pilot programs have already launched since 2018, with Cook County permanently adopting the model after success.
Working families struggling with rising costs might soon get help in the simplest form possible: cash in their pockets.
Michael D. Tubbs, president of Mayors for a Guaranteed Income, leads a coalition of over 150 mayors pushing programs that give low-income families up to $1,000 monthly with no strings attached. The former Stockton, California mayor told Fox News Digital that direct cash assistance offers a straightforward solution to America's affordability crisis.
The movement is gaining serious momentum. More than 100 pilot programs have launched across the country since 2018, testing whether direct payments help families cover basics like rent, childcare, and groceries.
In February, the coalition celebrated a milestone: over 60 bills proposing cash-based policies have been introduced in 15 states. Another 20 bills in 11 additional states aim to establish statewide guaranteed income programs.
The results speak for themselves in Cook County, Illinois. The nation's second-largest county made its guaranteed income program permanent after a successful pilot that started in 2022 using federal COVID relief funds. Participants received regular cash payments that helped stabilize their finances during economic uncertainty.

The Ripple Effect
The bipartisan appeal of affordability solutions is breaking through political gridlock. Last month, the House passed affordable housing legislation with a rare 390-9 vote, showing both parties recognize families need relief.
Tubbs argues the government has a responsibility to act. "People are saying that the social safety net is being frayed," he explained. Rising inflation and unaffordability stem from policy decisions, he notes, making government-led solutions essential.
The pilot programs offer valuable data on how direct assistance works. Families use the money for immediate needs without bureaucratic hurdles or restrictions. The simplicity eliminates administrative costs and gets help to people faster.
Tubbs has expanded the coalition beyond mayors, founding Counties for a Guaranteed Income and Legislators for a Guaranteed Income to spread the model. The goal is pushing federal adoption of similar cash assistance programs.
With housing costs, healthcare expenses, and grocery bills squeezing working families nationwide, local leaders are stepping up with tested solutions that put money directly into struggling households.
