16-Year-Old Lifeguard Saves Drowning Boy in Massive Waves

When massive waves swept a young boy into the Pacific Ocean off Santa Cruz's Seabright Beach last Saturday, 16-year-old lifeguard Ryder Williams made a split-second decision that saved a life. "I just was not going to let that happen," he told his father after refusing to release his grip on the struggling 10-year-old, even as waves crashed over them both.

The dramatic rescue unfolded when the boy lost his balance in the surf and was pulled 15 yards offshore. Ryder, on duty with California State Parks, spotted the distressed child and ran to help.

Video captured by photographer Scott Vander Dussen shows the teen battling enormous waves to reach the boy. For several tense minutes, the ocean tossed them both like rag dolls while Ryder maintained his grip.

Bystanders tried to help but were pushed back by the powerful surf. Eventually, another lifeguard reached them and helped bring the boy safely to shore.

The rescue went viral online, with thousands calling Ryder a hero. But the teen doesn't see it that way, according to his father Shane, a retired firefighter.

"He told me he doesn't know why everyone was blowing this out of proportion," Shane said. "His comments to me are like, 'Any other lifeguard on duty would do the same thing I did.'"

Why This Inspires

Ryder's humble response reveals something deeper than a single heroic act. This was a lifetime in the making.

Shane remembers taking baby Ryder on beach cruises alongside the Santa Cruz cliffs. The boy learned to swim by age six, then spent years surfing, boogie boarding, and playing water polo as a hole set, constantly battling opponents trying to drown him out of plays.

"He and his mother Shannon would joke about being uncomfortable with everyone trying to drown our boy," Shane laughed. But that comfort in chaos became years of junior lifeguard training.

Ryder even pushed through four days of fever to complete the lifeguard academy just before this summer. Saturday's viral rescue was his first save, but not his last that day. After his shift ended, he helped rescue two more people in conditions he considered even more difficult.

The difference? Nobody filmed the second rescue, and Ryder didn't care one bit.

"It's just been in his DNA since he was born," Shane said. "He sees what happened Saturday as his job, his duty."

The rescue was one of 34 that weekend as the National Weather Service warned of dangerous waves from distant tropical cyclones. For Ryder Williams, it was just the beginning of what promises to be an extraordinary career saving lives.
