16-Year-Old Tennis Player Wins First Pro Title in Memphis

At 16, Kristina Liutova just made tennis history in Memphis, and even she couldn't quite believe it.

The Russian teenager entered the Memphis Classic ranked No. 229 in the world with what she called "small goals." She had to battle through two qualifying rounds just to earn a spot in the main tournament against the world's top players.

Nobody expected what happened next.

On August 2, Liutova defeated Darja Vidmanova 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 to claim her first WTA singles title at the Leftwich Tennis Center. She's now the youngest player to win a WTA singles championship since Coco Gauff won the Linz Open as a 15-year-old in 2019.

The match wasn't easy. After losing the first set badly, Liutova found her rhythm and dominated the second. The final set came down to nerves and determination.

Up 40-30 with a 5-2 lead in the final set, Liutova had her first chance to close out the match. The Memphis crowd could feel the moment arriving. But Vidmanova forced one more game, making the teenager wait just a little longer for glory.

"There were so many emotions held in me, but you have to stay composed on the court," Liutova said after the match. "After that last point, there was just a lot of relief. Incredible. Just happy, very happy."

When she finally clinched the final point, the 16-year-old fell to the court in disbelief.
