17 New On-Call Firefighters Graduate in Humberside

Seventeen new firefighters just proved that ordinary people can do extraordinary things.

Humberside Fire & Rescue Service welcomed its newest on-call firefighters at a special passing-out parade, celebrating months of intensive training. The ceremony marked the moment these recruits officially became emergency responders, ready to serve communities across North and North East Lincolnshire, Hull, and the East Riding.

The training wasn't easy. Over several months, the recruits mastered emergency response techniques, trauma care, communication skills, teamwork, and leadership. They learned to handle everything from house fires and car accidents to floods and complex rescue operations.

Two firefighters stood out among an already impressive group. Firefighter Normington and Firefighter Hartley each received a Silver Axe from their instructors, a distinguished honor recognizing exceptional performance and determination throughout the course.

What makes these firefighters remarkable isn't just their new skills. It's their willingness to serve while juggling everything else life throws at them.

On-call firefighters don't work traditional schedules. They maintain full-time jobs, run businesses, and raise families while staying ready to respond when their communities need them. When the alarm sounds, they drop what they're doing and rush to help neighbors in crisis.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Matt Sutcliffe praised their commitment. "Our on-call firefighters play a vital role in protecting their local communities, often balancing their commitment to the Service alongside their primary roles and family lives," he said. "I am incredibly proud of what our recruits have achieved and have no doubt they will make a positive impact in the communities we serve."

The new firefighters will join thirteen stations across the region, including Barton, Winterton, Scunthorpe, Beverley, Cleethorpes, Crowle, Epworth, Hornsea, Market Weighton, Patrington, Pocklington, Preston, and Withernsea. Their presence ensures these communities continue receiving rapid emergency response whenever needed.

Friends, family, instructors, and colleagues filled the ceremony, celebrating not just the recruits' achievements but the dedication required to get there. The training instructors who guided them deserve recognition too, preparing these ordinary citizens to handle extraordinary situations.
