17-Year-Old Wins First Dutch Junior Gravel Championship

A 17-year-old cyclist just wrote his name into the record books as the first junior gravel champion in Dutch history.

Delano Heeren crossed the finish line victorious in Rijssen this Saturday, claiming the inaugural Dutch Gravel Championship title in the junior category. For the young rider from North Brabant, the win was extra special because it came in his debut race with grenke – Auto Eder, the team he joined just weeks earlier on September 1st.

The race started fast, with Heeren pushing to the front after just 10 kilometers. He and another rider broke away from the pack, setting up what would become a tough 90-kilometer battle.

"In the final stretch, I attacked again, but they caught up with me once more," Heeren said after the race. "In the end, though, I won the sprint."

The victory comes as no surprise to those who've followed Heeren's impressive career. In February, he became the Junior Cyclo-cross World Champion in his hometown of Hulst, making up a 20-second deficit on the final lap to claim the rainbow jersey.

His résumé also includes fifth place at the European Cyclo-cross Championships, a win at the Azencross in Loenhout, and 12th place in the Junior Paris-Roubaix. The common thread? Heeren excels on challenging, rough terrain where grit matters as much as speed.
