18-Year-Old Becomes Youngest Male College Professor Ever

Nathan Thomas walked into his first college lecture hall in August 2023 as an 18-year-old. But unlike his peers, he stood at the front teaching complex engineering concepts to students older than himself.

This week, Guinness World Records officially confirmed what Thomas achieved that day. At 18 years and 346 days old, he became the youngest male college professor in recorded history, breaking a record that stood for over three centuries.

The previous record holder was Colin Maclaurin, who began teaching at 19 years old back in 1717. Thomas also came remarkably close to the overall youngest professor record, missing Alia Sabur's mark by just 16 days.

Thomas's path to the podium started early. He enrolled at Miami Dade College when he was just 10 years old, already showing exceptional talent in mathematics and engineering.

By 14, he transferred to Florida International University where he earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical engineering with honors. Four years later, he returned to Miami Dade College to teach computer programming and engineering.

Both of Thomas's parents are engineers, but he credits his mother for sparking his love of teaching. "She had a way of making things feel simple even when they weren't, and I think some of that stuck with me," he told Guinness.

For Thomas, age has never been a barrier in the classroom. "Once you're in that setting, everyone's there for the same reason, which is to learn," he explained.

What makes Thomas's story remarkable isn't just his age or accomplishments. It's his genuine passion for that lightbulb moment when understanding clicks for his students.

"It's a different kind of satisfaction than solving a problem yourself, almost like getting to relive that feeling through someone else," Thomas shared. He says teaching forces him to understand material on a deeper level, meaning he learns just as much as his students do.

Thomas hasn't stopped pushing forward. While still teaching online courses, he's now pursuing his law degree at the University of Miami School of Law, set to graduate in 2028.

His approach remains beautifully simple: "I just focus on trying to do my job well and helping students in whatever way I can. If someone's willing to put in the effort, that's really all that matters to me."

Thomas proves that brilliance paired with humility and genuine care for others can achieve the extraordinary at any age.
