Nathan Thomas smiling, youngest male professor teaching engineering at Miami Dade College

21-Year-Old Breaks 306-Year Record as Youngest Male Professor

🤯 Mind Blown

Nathan Thomas became the world's youngest male professor at just 18, shattering a record that stood since 1746. Now he's teaching engineering students his own age at Miami Dade College.

At 18 years and 346 days old, Nathan Thomas walked into his first college classroom not as a student, but as the professor teaching complex engineering concepts to peers his own age.

Thomas officially broke a world record that had stood for 306 years. The previous holder, Colin Maclaurin, became a professor at 19 back in 1746.

His journey to this achievement started remarkably early. Thomas dual-enrolled at Miami Dade College when he was just 10 years old, showing a natural gift for mathematics that his family of engineers nurtured from the start.

By age 14, he transferred to Florida International University. In the next four years, he earned both bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical engineering with honors.

When Thomas began teaching COP 2270: C for Engineers in August 2023, he became just 16 days younger than the current youngest female professor record holder, Alia Sabur. His students quickly learned that age wasn't a barrier to effective teaching.

"Once you're in that setting, everyone's there for the same reason, which is to learn," Thomas explained. "Age doesn't really factor into that."

Why This Inspires

Thomas credits his mother, also an engineer, for making complex concepts feel simple during his childhood. Now he gets to pass that gift forward in his own classroom.

"The part about teaching that I like most is watching something click for a student," he shared. "You can kind of see it happen in real time, when a concept that felt impossible a few minutes ago suddenly makes sense."

Manny Perez, Dean of the School of Engineering, Technology & Design, recognized Thomas's unique ability to connect with students. "I think anytime you have the opportunity to meet a person like Nathan, you realize that there is someone special who can serve as an inspiration," Perez told The Reporter at Miami Dade College.

Now 21, Thomas isn't stopping with teaching. He's pursuing a law degree to specialize in intellectual property law with a focus on STEM fields, combining his engineering expertise with legal knowledge.

His approach to teaching remains refreshingly simple: "If someone's willing to put in the effort, that's really all that matters to me."
