18-Year-Old Wins $525K Latin Grammy Scholarship

At 18, Lea Garza has turned years of singing on festival stages across Yucatán into a scholarship that will launch her music career at one of the world's top music schools.

The Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation announced in August that Garza earned the Frost School of Music scholarship, worth $525,000 split between two recipients. The award covers her entire bachelor's degree at the University of Miami, including tuition and support services.

Garza's journey started long before the scholarship. Her family moved to Mérida in 2017, when she was just 11 years old, and the city became the backdrop for her rise as a performer.

She competed in local talent contests and performed at major festivals across the state, including the 2024 Héctor "Cholo" Herrera Festival. She also appeared on "España Got Talent" and shared stages with Yucatecan artists like David Cavazos and Los Juglares.

Music is in her DNA. Her father, Javier Garza, is a Grammy-credited mixing engineer who produced her single "LUZ" last year. Her grandfather Xavier Garza performed with the Mexican band Los Locos del Ritmo, and her mother Giulia Nenci works as a music therapist.

Garza holds dual citizenship and performs in three languages: Spanish, English, and Italian. That versatility, combined with years of stage experience, helped her stand out among scholarship applicants from across the United States and Latin America.

For a singer who was belting Demi Lovato covers at 12, that future is now becoming real. Garza's scholarship puts her in the same halls where Grammy winners across pop, jazz, and Latin music studied before her.

The Frost School of Music has been training musicians since 1926 and received the largest donation ever given to a university music program when philanthropists Phillip and Patricia Frost contributed $33 million in 2003. Now Garza will walk those same halls, funded by people who believe in her voice.
