7 NY Students Win Scholarships for Teaching, STEM Careers

Seven high school graduates in rural New York just got the financial boost they need to chase their college dreams, thanks to scholarships honoring educators who believed in the power of learning.

The Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation recently awarded more than $6,000 in scholarships to students from Olean High School and Portville Central School. Each scholarship carries a legacy of teachers who spent decades shaping young minds in these small communities.

Four Olean High School students received the Mary Elizabeth Smith Scholarship. Finnian Caya and Ava West each got $700, while Miley Crawford and Dickson Yang received $1,000 each. The scholarship comes from the estate of Mary Elizabeth Smith, who wanted to support local students long after she was gone.

Their plans show the diversity of today's career paths. Caya is heading to the University at Buffalo for mechanical engineering, while Crawford will study electrical and software engineering at Robert Morris University. West chose psychology at St. John Fisher University, and Yang is pursuing finance at Bentley University.

Three more students won scholarships named for the Johnson sisters, all teachers at local schools. AnnBella Conkey from Portville received $1,100 from the Signe H. Johnson Scholarship to study exercise science at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.

Isabelle West and Ava Finch from Olean High School each received $1,200 through another Johnson family scholarship. Finch plans to become a speech language pathologist at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, while West will study physical therapy at Nazareth University.

The Ripple Effect

These scholarships do more than ease financial stress for seven families. They show students in rural communities that their neighbors believe in them and that education opens doors worth walking through. When local foundations invest in homegrown talent, they strengthen the entire region's future.
