😊 Feel Good

Twenty high school seniors from Santa Barbara County just scored college scholarships totaling over $66,000 for their artistic talent. The awards mark 47 years of the Scholarship Foundation celebrating young artists and investing in their creative futures.

Twenty talented high school artists in Santa Barbara County are heading to college with scholarships in hand, thanks to a program that's been championing creative students for nearly half a century.

The Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara awarded more than $66,000 to student artists during a reception at Art & Soul Gallery on March 3. Each of the 20 winners earned between $3,000 and $3,500 for submitting original artwork that wowed a panel of local judges.

Scarlett Ramirez from Santa Barbara High School took home the top prize, winning the Schall Family Best of Show award plus an additional $1,000 scholarship. Her work stood out among 54 student portfolios submitted from schools across Southern Santa Barbara County.

"The winning submissions never fail to impress," said Melinda Cabrera, president and CEO of the Scholarship Foundation. She credited area schools for providing exceptional art instruction that helps students develop their skills.

Three prominent local artists served as judges, reviewing portfolios in January at Community Friends of Santa Barbara. They selected winners from eight different high schools, including Dos Pueblos, Carpinteria, San Marcos, and Alta Vista Alternative High School.

The Ripple Effect

This scholarship program represents more than just financial support. Since 1962, the Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara has awarded over $167 million to 64,000 county students, making it the nation's largest community-based scholarship provider.

The foundation doesn't stop at art scholarships either. It offers free financial aid advising services to help students navigate the often confusing college funding process, removing barriers that might otherwise keep talented young people from pursuing higher education.

By recognizing artistic achievement specifically, the program sends a powerful message that creative talent matters just as much as athletic or academic excellence. Students like Ruby Bargiel, Zoe Barnett, Georgia Brown, and 16 others now have tangible proof that their art has real value.

The foundation held a separate competition for Santa Ynez Valley Union High School students in February, ensuring rural students get equal opportunities to showcase their talents and earn support for college.

These scholarships could mean the difference between attending art school or setting aside creative dreams for more "practical" paths, giving young artists the confidence to pursue their passions.
