20 Santa Barbara Students Win Art Scholarships

Twenty high school seniors in Santa Barbara County are heading to college with scholarships in hand, thanks to their artistic talent and a foundation that's been championing student creators for nearly five decades.

The Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara honored the winning artists at a reception on March 3 at Art & Soul Gallery. Each student will receive between $3,000 and $3,500 to support their college education, with the best in show winner taking home an extra $1,000.

Scarlett Ramirez from Santa Barbara High School claimed the top prize, earning the Schall Family Best of Show award. Her work stood out among 54 student portfolios submitted by seniors across Southern Santa Barbara County.

"The winning submissions never fail to impress," said Melinda Cabrera, president and CEO of the Scholarship Foundation. She credited the exceptional work to outstanding art instruction in local schools.

The 19 other winners came from six different high schools, including Dos Pueblos, Carpinteria, San Marcos, and Alta Vista Alternative High School. Three experienced local artists judged the competition in January, carefully reviewing each student's original portfolio.

The Ripple Effect

This annual competition does more than fund college dreams. It validates young artists at a crucial moment when they're deciding whether to pursue their passion professionally. By recognizing their talent with real financial support, the program sends a powerful message: your creativity has value, and your community believes in you.

The Scholarship Foundation has been doing this work since 1962, awarding more than $167 million to 64,000 county students. That's generations of young people who got their shot at higher education because their community invested in them.

For these 20 artists, the scholarships mean less worry about tuition and more freedom to focus on developing their craft in college. Some may become professional artists, art teachers, designers, or creatives in fields we haven't even imagined yet.

The winning artwork was displayed at the reception, giving the broader Santa Barbara community a chance to see the impressive talent emerging from local classrooms.
