20-Year-Old Darts Player Wins First Pro Title Without a Card

Henry Coates, a 20-year-old from England, captured his first professional title at Players Championship 25 in Hildesheim, Germany, despite not holding a PDC Tour card. He entered the tournament as a "top-up player" from the developmental Challenge Tour and left as a champion.

In the final, Coates defeated Australian pro Damon Heta 8-4 with an impressive 104.88 average across 12 legs. The victory was especially sweet considering that in their last meeting, Heta had beaten Coates 6-0 in what the young player called "a lesson."

"This probably won't sink in until next week," Coates said after his win. "I've played for so many years and now the hard work and practice is paying off."

The tournament also saw major upsets among established stars. World No. 3 Gian van Veen lost in the round of 64 to Canadian Jim Long, while Michael van Gerwen fell in the round of 16 after Jeffrey De Graaf won five consecutive legs to secure victory.
