20-Year-Old Indian Shuttler Wins First Super 300 Title

A young shuttler from Haryana just made history on the badminton court, and her victory proves that dedication and smart training can propel athletes to elite status faster than ever.

Devika Sihag clinched her first BWF Super 300 title at the Thailand Masters on Sunday, winning when Malaysia's Goh Jin Wei retired due to injury during the final. The Indian was leading 21-8, 6-3 when Goh had to withdraw with a hamstring problem.

But the final score doesn't tell the full story of Devika's journey to this moment. The 20-year-old trains at the Padukone-Dravid Centre for Sports Excellence in Bengaluru under coach Umendra Rana, and she's been sharpening her skills alongside two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu for the past few months.

"I didn't think about winning or losing, rather wanted to give my 100%," Devika said after her victory. "That gave me the confidence."

Her dominant performance showed exactly what that training partnership has produced. Devika opened with a 4-0 lead using deep returns and mixed strokes that kept Goh guessing, then pulled away to take the first game 21-8.

Why This Inspires

Devika's achievement places her in remarkably rare company. Only Sindhu and Saina Nehwal had previously won Super 300 women's singles titles for India, making this breakthrough a genuinely historic moment for Indian badminton.

The victory should push Devika into the Top 40 world rankings, opening doors to bigger tournaments and tougher competition. And her mentor couldn't be prouder of what she's accomplished.

The daughter of a lawyer and a teacher, Devika has enjoyed steady progress over the past few years. She won the Malaysia International in August 2025 and contributed to India's mixed team bronze at the 2025 World University Games, building momentum toward this career-defining victory.

She's already heading to her next challenge, competing in a tournament in Baku, Azerbaijan starting Tuesday. With this title under her belt and the guidance of Olympic champions in her corner, Devika's best badminton is likely still ahead of her.
