200 Stargazers Witness Perseid Meteors Over Egypt

Two hundred people stood together under the Egyptian desert sky, united by their love of the stars and the promise of a spectacular show overhead.

Astrophotographer Osama Fathi created an extraordinary image during the peak of the Perseid meteor shower on August 13-14. Working through the night in Egypt's Western Desert, he combined 240 separate camera exposures taken over 100 minutes to capture both meteors and the apparent circular motion of stars around the North Star.

The resulting photograph tells multiple cosmic stories at once. Perseid meteors appear as brilliant unbroken streaks, each one created by a particle no bigger than a grain of sand burning up in Earth's atmosphere. The curving star trails reveal how far the stars appeared to move during Fathi's shoot, a visual record of Earth's constant rotation beneath the heavens.

"The night was exceptionally clear and I was surrounded by around 200 fellow astronomy enthusiasts sharing stories, stargazing and photographing the sky," Fathi told Space.com. The gathering transformed a solo photography mission into a community celebration of wonder.

The Perseid meteor shower happens every August when Earth passes through the debris trail left behind by comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. These ancient particles create brief moments of light that have captivated humans for thousands of years.

The photographer combined his landscape and sky images through a technique called stacking, building up the final view layer by layer. The result showcases the natural beauty of the desert terrain, the mechanics of our rotating planet, and the annual gift of the Perseid meteor shower all in one frame.
